She woke up bleary-eyed and a little slow to the party spirit but snuggled a bit with Pop before he headed off to his new job at the Piggery.
We spent a nice chunk of the day with Grammy practicing Fiona's new piano...
and leading her around excitedly while we prepared for party time.
This photo captures their loving relationship so well.
Grammy got a helium canister and they filled up 30 balloons.
Nose bonk.
So fun (if backlit).
We tied a couple to her for most of the day, mostly to help distract her from the fact that she'd missed her afternoon nap.
The party REALLY started when Uncle Nick showed up. He bought the biggest balloon in town and, because it didn't fit in his car, drove the back roads through town while holding it out the window and hoping not to be pulled over by the notoriously sticklerish Cayuga Heights coppers.
When I attached it to her Carharrts the buoyancy really helped her keep her feet.
She tried to pick Emma up but there wasn't quite enough lift.
Such a wonderful pair of 1-year-old friends.
They're starting to do stuff together without us. Wow.
Lots of fun people came over to play.
Then it was cake time.
"Sugarless pastel coconut frosting on a vegan carrot cake shaped like my trumpet?!
You shouldn't have!"
Thankfully Mia and Conner from across the street (our soon-to-be neighbors!) made a REAL cake with sugar, and eggs, and strawberries, and candles.
"Birthday cake kinda tastes like cardboard, huh?."
"Dude, that's your hat."
There wasn't a drop of rain and we had some fun deck time with bubbles, courtesy of Jenny and Rob.
Rebekah was a natural, no surprise.
Look at all these lovely people we get in our lives. So lucky.
We couldn't manage a picture of her looking at the camera in Carharrts holding her carpenter set with her "Fiona is One!" hand-made card from Grammeg, but in REAL LIFE it was awesome.
Thank you everyone, for loving us so well.
It's been a mind-blowing year.
xoxo
